My message was a popular one of its time. And, taking into account my staunch German heritage it is no surprise. “Children should be seen and not heard”; delivered literally and implicitly by my parents. Probably more so by my father – be that as it may; it was delivered loud and clear. Oh, I took it to heart, creating and imprinting the belief that what I think is not important enough to be expressed or paid attention to… carrying it to adulthood. I felt it in my body, my first inclination always to pull back and stand in the sidelines; I believed it in my mind; giving way to what others said or thought over my input and opinion. My spirit thoroughly accepted the belief and kept me playing small, habitually shifting focus away from my own wants and desires.

On August 23rd 1992 my life took a dramatic turn as the result of a tragedy which shook the ground beneath my feet. A friend of mine, 31 years young, a creative, beautiful soul, was repeatedly stabbed by an intruder in her home. She managed to dial 911, but her weakened voice was disregarded by the part-time dispatcher who hung up on her (believing it to be a crank call). Several hours later, when the morning shift dispatcher came on duty, he followed up, but it was too late for my friend. Her voice and her life had been dismissed. Not only did I lose a friend to a horrific crime, something deep within the core of my soul shifted. The image of her unanswered call for help haunts me to this day.
She was not heard. I was always told children should be seen and not heard. I knew it was time to heal my old belief, and in doing so, help others to heal their beliefs. I became impassioned, wanting to be heard. I did have something important to say and was worthy of being listened to.
